Last Tuesday, all Gozitan studentsattending Form 2, were treated to a half-day of entertainment organised by Europe Direct Information Centre of Gozo in collaboration with The European Commission Representation in Malta.
The activity was opened by Mr Michael Grech, President of the Gozo Business Chamber who spoke about his experiences, both professional and personal, with regards to the importance of language learning. Then it was the turn of the Acting Head of the EC Representation in Malta, Ms Diane Spiteri, who said that the more a person learns different languages, the more creative that person becomes, and she spoke about Robert Schuman’s creative solution which stopped Europeans from waging further wars against each other, which he declared on the 9th May 1950 – which is now known as Europe Day, since it represents the birth of today’s European Union..
Then, each school gave a presentation about a particular language, and then there was some traditional Maltese and Spanish dancing. This was followed by an interactive quiz filled with games and information, and then Spiro Sillato gave a rendition of several Maltese songs..
The UNESCO Permanent Ambassador Delegate, H.E. Fr Joe Vella Gauci made the concluding remarks and spoke about the diversity thriving in Europe, from a linguistic, cultural and religious point of view. He also mentioned several fun facts about Europe.
The activity concluded with everyone attending gathered around 4 large tables serving traditional snacks originating from a handful of European countries.
