EUROPE DIRECT Gozo, in collaboration with EkoSkola/LEAF and Nature Trust – FEE Malta, successfully organised the EUROPE DIRECT Gozo / ECO-Schools LEAF Award Scheme for the ninth consecutive year. This initiative is open exclusively to Gozo-based schools enrolled in the FEE programmes.
Participating schools selected one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and linked them to the European Green Deal through dedicated school projects. These initiatives actively involved both educators and students, with the aim of raising awareness about environmental protection and sustainable living.
Mr Jesmond Buttigieg, Manager of EUROPE DIRECT Gozo, commended both teachers and students for their outstanding commitment and congratulated them on the excellent work carried out.
Mr Daniel Borg, CEO of the Gozo Business Chamber, encouraged participants to continue making a positive impact by remaining committed to environmental initiatives and persevering in their efforts to protect our natural surroundings.
The event was also addressed by Mr Christian Zammit of the Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) and Ms Charmaine Borg from the Bank of Valletta, sponsors of the initiative, who praised the quality of the projects and urged students to become active agents of change, as future leaders of society.
Concluding remarks were delivered by Dr Alice Micallef, Director within the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, who congratulated all participants and encouraged them to continue inspiring others to take part in similar projects.
The 2025 edition of the scheme concluded with a joint award, with Gozo College Agius de Soldanis Middle School and St Theresa Primary School, Kerċem being declared joint winners.
