During July, EUROPE DIRECT Gozo, in collaboration with Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta (SEM), delivered a number of interactive information sessions as part of Skola Sajf 2026.
The sessions provided children with an engaging introduction to the European Union, helping them better understand what the EU is, how it was formed, and the role it plays today. Through age-appropriate explanations and interactive questions, the children explored the idea of the European Union as a community of countries working together in peace, unity and cooperation.
During the sessions, participants learned that the European Union is made up of 27 Member States and that Malta became a full member of the EU on 1 May 2004. The children were also introduced to the EU flag, the meaning behind its circle of 12 stars, and the EU’s official motto: “United in diversity” — “Magħqudin fid-diversità”.
The sessions also covered several interesting facts about the European Union, including its 24 official languages, its population, the use of the euro, and the main EU institutions. The children were encouraged to participate by answering questions, naming EU countries, identifying languages, and reflecting on what it means to be part of a wider European community.
To make the sessions more engaging, the presentations also included fun facts about different EU Member States, such as Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Croatia, Sweden, Austria and Denmark. These examples helped children discover more about Europe’s culture, history, landmarks and traditions.
The sessions concluded with a quiz and a penalty shootout game, offering the children an enjoyable way to revise what they had learned.
EUROPE DIRECT Gozo and SEM remain committed to bringing the European Union closer to citizens, including younger audiences, by promoting awareness, participation and a better understanding of the opportunities and values connected to EU membership.
